CATIE Workshop Descriptions

HIV Treatment: Supporting your Clients

HIV Foundations: An introduction to basic terms and concepts of how HIV affects the body: transmission, HIV and the immune system, the progress of untreated HIV, CD4+ count and viral load. The workshop concludes with a presentation of the different antiretroviral drug classes.

Newly Diagnosed: Explore the different questions that a newly diagnosed individual might ask, and how best to respond. Participants will draw on their own expertise and experience in order to come up with answers to these potentially difficult questions.

Viral Replication Cycle: Learn how HIV makes more copies of itself in the body, providing a framework to understand how HIV drugs work. This interactive workshop will help participants to develop clear, simple analogies that they can use to explain HIV treatment to clients.

Adherence and Resistance: Learn why adherence to HIV medications can be challenging, and about the relationship between adherence and drug resistance. Strategies to improve and support adherence will also be discussed.

Bridging the Gap: The Doctor-Patient Relationship

Explore the importance of good communication with your healthcare provider, your role in decision- making and advocating for good health and develop skills to improve your interactions with your healthcare team.

Fighting Wear and Tear: Understanding HIV and Aging

Understand the connection between HIV and aging and develop protective strategies to preserve good health and well-being.

HIV and Mental Health: HAND, HAART and Mind

Learn more about depression, HIV-associated Neurocognitive Disorder (HAND) and other mental health issues impacting the lives of people living with HIV. Strategies to prevent, support and treat mental health issues in the context of HIV will be discussed.

New Prevention Technologies

New biomedical prevention technologies (NPTs) to reduce the risk of HIV transmission are on the horizon and are beginning to show promise in clinical trials. This interactive presentation will explore the rationale and research behind these technologies and the implications of the research for HIV prevention in Canada
